LG Nexus 4 and LTE: The Whole Story

As we all know by now, the LG Nexus 4 has been advertised as being a HSPA+ device, with no 4G LTE compatibility. Nevertheless, after the handset has been opened up and studied by tech enthusiasts, it turned out that the Nexus 4 does have an LTE chip inside, reason why many people have begun wondering whether or not they can benefit from fast data speeds with a bit of hacking.

Well, technically you can’t and we’ve previously explained why, but the story did not end there, and as a matter of fact, a few enthusiasts in Canada who have been fiddling with their latest Nexus device have actually managed to enable LTE connectivity. We’ll get into details after the break.

LG Nexus 4 and LTE – The Whole Story

Tech enthusiasts have found a way to enable the LTE connectivity on their Nexus 4 by changing a particular setting in the testing menu, the one that can be accessed accessed by typing *#*#4636#*#* on the dialer. This settings-change allows the Nexus 4 to pick up LTE signal in Canada, specifically the signal coming from Rogers, TELUS and Bell.

The reason behind this is because the Nexus 4 and its LTE chip are compatible with LTE band 4 on the 1700 and 2100 mHz frequencies, and in turn, Rogers, TELUS and Bell are the only carriers in Canada with LTE band 4 support. That being said, your Nexus 4 will not be able to pick-up LTE signal in any other region that does not offer band 4.

So what’s the deal anyway and why hasn’t LG and Google enabled 4G on the Nexus 4 in the first place ? Well, it’s not really just a matter of enabling the existing chip. The fact of the matter is that the Snapdragon S4 Pro chipset only comes hand in hand with a modem that contains 4G LTE capabilities, and cannot be installed separately.

However, the LTE chip on the Nexus 4 still does not offer full-fledged LTE connectivity because, alongside the chip-set, there should also be a signal amplifier and filter, and these pieces of hardware are missing for the sake of making the Nexus 4 an affordable HSPA+ device.

Bottom line is that the LTE chip on the Nexus 4 is not really that helpful and it’s missing key hardware. In addition to that, theoretically it’s against the law to make use of the 4G LTE capability because it hasn’t been approved by the regulators, reason why LG will most definitely patch the issue with a future update.

So, in other words, no you cannot fully benefit from 4G LTE support on your Nexus 4 and the reason why the chipset exists in the first place is because that’s how the Snapdragon S4 chip has been designed and manufactured.
